Itinerary

Horta, on the island of Faial, is home to one of the most famous sailors' cafes in the world: Cafe Peter Sport. Many famous ocean sailors visited the cafe and left a souvenir behind. The ‘Oosterschelde’ is moored a few hundred meters from the cafe. The crew welcomes you aboard and introduces you to your fellow travelers.

We begin this trip by exploring the Azores. After departing from Horta, we sail to Pico, where the imposing volcano dominates the island. After Pico, we also pay a visit to Terceira. The first days of the trip thus offer a nice balance between active sailing and time to explore the islands. Green hills, steep cliffs, and small harbor towns give these first days a relaxed character.

After Terceira, we leave the Azores. We set course for the northeast. A rhythm develops naturally on board. You help set and trim the sails, take the helm, and participate in the watch system. Watches take turns, meals are eaten together, and at night the starry sky stretches out above the deck. This is real ocean sailing.

After a week, we reach the Bay of Biscay, an area known for bad weather. In reality, weather conditions vary greatly, and by now we are accustomed to the dynamics at sea. There is also dynamics on deck, which requires cooperation and attention while sailing.

Eventually, the towers of La Rochelle appear, which have been welcoming ships for centuries. Bienvenue en France!

The above itinerary serves as a guideline. The captain may always decide to take a different route or call at a different landing site if circumstances warrant it. At a number of locations, we will try to organize a fun excursion for all passengers. Such an excursion is never mandatory; you are always free to explore the arrival site on your own. The captain will ask in advance who wishes to participate. Any costs for such an excursion are not included in the travel price but are divided equally among the passengers. 3

We would like the ‘Oosterschelde’ to be accessible to everyone, but you must realize that you are undertaking a sea voyage aboard a sailing ship and therefore need to be sufficiently fit and healthy. We use different levels (the waves) to indicate how strenuous the trip might be. Are you unsure whether a particular trip is suitable for you? Then please contact our shipping company office to discuss this.
