Before we leave, the crew gives a detailed explanation and there is also regular instruction along the way and you learn more and more about sailing with a three-master, navigation, meteorology and maintenance. The Atlantic Ocean is ahead of us. We will not make any stops during this route. Yet the journey is very varied.

Cape Verde is located in the trade mark belt. That means good weather, but also a strong wind from the North to East. So we try to steer as close to the wind as possible. After a few days, the trade winds become less resistant and the temperature slightly lower. Suddenly we are now sailing in a climatologically very different area; the west wind belt. The weather is changeable here and there is a chance that we will encounter a low pressure area. That usually means westerly winds, drizzle and clearing after the front passage at this latitude. The wind will shift regularly and so we have to regularly set the sails, reef or deflect or change course.

Close to the Azores, there is a good chance of seeing whales. So far out to sea there are even many birds around us and now and then we see an angelfish, dolphins or other sea creatures.

Close to the Azores, the chances of seeing whales are high. And even so far out to sea there are still many birds around us. With a bit of luck we will see dolphins, an angelfish, or other sea creatures in addition to schools of flying fish. We expect to arrive in Horta no later than April 10. The next morning you disembark unless you sail further with us to Rotterdam

General

A mile-maker is a journey that takes the ship from A to B in the shortest possible time. Depending on the weather, a mile marker may take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the trip.

This trip is only suitable for the experienced and fit sea traveler. During a crossing or long journey, there are few possibilities to divert to a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

The shipping company would like the Oosterschelde to be accessible to the widest possible public, but you must realize that you are making a sea voyage on board a sailing ship and that this requires more of your physical body than a daily walk. Moreover, some journeys are more challenging than others. With the different levels we give an indication of how difficult the trips (can) be. Not sure if a trip is right for you?
