A PILGRIMAGE BY SEA
For centuries pilgrims from England and Ireland travelled by ship to Galicia, to walk from there to Santiago de Compostela. This voyage follows that old route: a journey at the crossroads of faith, history, sustainability and adventure.
Crossing the Channel and the Bay of Biscay is a challenge, and exactly what the Morgenster was built for. Where the deep Atlantic meets the European continental shelf, the sailing can be spectacular. The nights at sea, free of light pollution and with the whole Milky Way above you, are unforgettable.
THE ROUTE
Fowey
You board in Fowey, a historic harbour town on the south coast of Cornwall, and meet the crew.
Out of the Channel
The ship sails west out of the Channel, along the coast of Cornwall, onto the open sea.
The Bay of Biscay
Day and night the Morgenster sails south across the Bay. You take the helm, help with the sails and stand watch, and with luck dolphins swim at the bow.
A Coruña
After about a week you reach A Coruña, with its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules. A Coruña is the starting point of the Camino Inglés, the English pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela: about 75 kilometres, walked in five to six days. Many guests step straight from the ship onto the trail.
EXTRA INFORMATION
LIFE ON BOARD
The Morgenster is a brig: a two-master with square sails, like the classic sailing ships of old. You are not a passenger but part of the crew: you hoist sails, take the helm and stand watch alongside the permanent crew. You sleep in cabins for four or for two people, and meals are provided on board. The Morgenster is a sail training ship: everyone takes part in the sailing as much as possible, from navigating to setting and trimming the sails.
