ACROSS THE NORTH SEA TO CORNWALL

This spring voyage is a firm favourite among adventurous sailors. It combines solid stretches of open sea with the timeless pleasure of sailing a traditional square-rigged ship.

From the old naval harbour of Den Helder the Morgenster heads south-west. After the busy Strait of Dover comes the Channel, and the further west you go, the more dramatic the English coast becomes. You finish in Fowey, a picturesque harbour town on the south coast of Cornwall.

You board in the late afternoon and meet the crew and your fellow travellers.

The North Sea

The ship sails south-west across the North Sea. You learn to handle the sails and take part in the watches, also at night under the stars.

Strait of Dover and the Channel

Between Dover and Calais lies one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. Then comes the Channel, where tides and currents make navigation all the more interesting.

Fowey

Along the increasingly rugged coast of Devon and Cornwall you reach Fowey. You disembark after breakfast.

LIFE ON BOARD

The Morgenster is a brig: a two-master with square sails, like the classic sailing ships of old. You are not a passenger but part of the crew: you hoist sails, take the helm and stand watch alongside the permanent crew. You sleep in cabins for four or for two people, and meals are provided on board. If you dare, you can climb the rigging under supervision for a sweeping view over the sea.

WHO IS THIS VOYAGE FOR

For adventurous travellers who really want to sail. No sailing experience is needed, just curiosity.

GOOD TO KNOW

• There are cabins for four and for two people; after your request you will hear about the availability of your cabin choice.
• Bring warm, waterproof clothing: in April it can be cold at sea.
• From Fowey you travel by train via London or fly from Newquay or Exeter.
• Travel insurance covering medical costs and repatriation is required; cancellation insurance is recommended.
• Travel to the port of departure and home from the port of arrival is not included.
• Ideally arrive a day before departure: the ship cannot wait for late arrivals.

How do I get home from Fowey?

The nearest station is Par; via London you continue by Eurostar. There are also flights from Newquay and Exeter.

What weather can I expect?

In mid-April it is 8 to 14 °C, with a chance of wind and rain. Dress in layers.
