ALONG SPAIN'S SOUTH-EAST COAST
Between the mountains of Andalusia and the sea lies Málaga, the starting point of this voyage. From there the Santa Maria Manuela sails east, with the Sierra Nevada long visible on the horizon.
For five days everything revolves around the rhythm of the ship: watches, sail manoeuvres, meals on deck and evenings under the stars. In Valencia a city awaits that is both ancient and ultra-modern.
THE ROUTE
Málaga
You board in the port of Málaga, close to the historic centre.
Across the Alboran Sea
The ship sails east along the Costa del Sol and the rugged Cabo de Gata, one of the driest and most unspoilt coasts in Europe.
Towards the Costa Blanca
Further north-east the ship crosses open water. You help on deck or enjoy the peace and the views.
Valencia
In Valencia you will find the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences and the old town with its cathedral, said to hold the Holy Grail.
EXTRA INFORMATION
LIFE ON BOARD
The Santa Maria Manuela is a 68-metre steel four-masted schooner, built in 1937 for the Portuguese cod fishery off Newfoundland and Greenland, the famous White Fleet. After a thorough restoration she has been sailing again since 2010, now with guests. Every cabin has its own bathroom with shower: shared cabins with bunks for four to six people (separate for men and women), cabins with a bunk bed or a double bed, and spacious master cabins for two to four people. A permanent crew sails the ship; you are always welcome to help, but you do not have to. You can help hoist and trim the sails, take the helm, learn knots or climb the mast under supervision. If you prefer to rest, find a spot on deck or in the bowsprit net. Meals are provided on board and eaten together.
