ACROSS OPEN SEA TO ITALY

On this voyage the sailing comes first. After leaving Palma you will see nothing but water for a while, and that is exactly the charm: time to get to know the ship, stand watch and scan the horizon.

You end in the Gulf of Poets, where Byron and Shelley found inspiration, close to the colourful villages of the Cinque Terre.

THE ROUTE

Palma de Mallorca

Before departure, walk through the old town to the cathedral above the harbour, then board.

The open sea

North-east, east of Menorca, towards the coast of Liguria. Help with the sails, keep lookout or find a quiet spot with a book.

Small things

Free of distractions, you notice the colour of the water changing, hear the wind in the rigging and see the first lights of the Italian coast appear.

La Spezia

Arrival in La Spezia. Stay longer for Portovenere or the Cinque Terre, where villages cling to the steep coast.

EXTRA INFORMATION

LIFE ON BOARD

The Santa Maria Manuela is a 68-metre steel four-masted schooner, built in 1937 for the Portuguese cod fishery off Newfoundland and Greenland, the famous White Fleet. After a thorough restoration she has been sailing again since 2010, now with guests. Every cabin has its own bathroom with shower: shared cabins with bunks for four to six people (separate for men and women), cabins with a bunk bed or a double bed, and spacious master cabins for two to four people. A permanent crew sails the ship; you are always welcome to help, but you do not have to. You can help hoist and trim the sails, take the helm, learn knots or climb the mast under supervision. If you prefer to rest, find a spot on deck or in the bowsprit net. Meals are provided on board and eaten together.
