VOLCANOES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN

The Azores lie in the middle of the Atlantic and are one of the wildest and greenest sailing areas in Europe. You leave from Horta on Faial, the port where ocean sailors from all over the world leave a painting on the harbour wall.

Then the Kairós sails to São Jorge, known for its steep cliffs and green fajãs by the sea, and to Pico, with the highest mountain in Portugal. In spring the chances of dolphins and whales are high.

THE ROUTE

Horta

Boarding in Horta marina and a visit to the famous Peter Café Sport.

São Jorge and Pico

Cliffs, fajãs, vineyards on lava soil and the Pico volcano.

Back to Faial

A last day around Faial and disembarking in Horta.

EXTRA INFORMATION

LIFE ON BOARD

The Kairós is a 38-metre steel staysail schooner, built in 2007 in the style of a classic yacht and designed by Klaus Röder. She carries 556 m² of sail and sails as a passenger ship under the Maltese flag. A permanent crew of six (captain, mate-engineer, bosun, cook and two stewardesses) looks after the ship and after you. With eight cabins and at most twelve guests it feels like sailing on a large private yacht. Six A cabins of 10 to 11 m² have a fixed double bed and a private bathroom with shower cubicle; the two B cabins of 8 to 9 m² have a small double bed or bunk beds and a private bathroom with classic yacht shower. Every cabin has adjustable air conditioning, a wardrobe, towels and a hair dryer. On deck there is plenty of room to sit and sunbathe, below deck a cosy saloon with bar. The pace is relaxed: sailing by day from bay to bay or island to island, with time to swim from the ship, go ashore and enjoy the deck. You are always welcome to help with the sails, but you do not have to. The route is indicative and depends on wind and weather.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to be able to sail?

No. The permanent crew sails the ship; you may help, but you do not have to.

Do we go ashore every day?

Usually, but wind and weather decide the programme. There is also plenty of time to swim from the ship.
