ISLAND HOPPING IN THE CARIBBEAN

Ten days of sunshine, trade winds and a different island every time: aboard the Clipper Stad Amsterdam you sail from Sint Maarten to Martinique, past six islands that each have a character of their own. No sailing experience is needed. You are welcome to lend a hand on deck, but you can just as well enjoy the view, a swim in a sheltered bay or a sundowner on deck. The programme is flexible: at every destination you set your own pace.

A sailing holiday in the Caribbean on a real tall ship is something entirely different from an ordinary cruise. No floating city with thousands of passengers, but a classic three-masted full-rigged ship with just a few dozen guests, where the sails are still set by hand. You anchor in bays that large cruise ships cannot reach, go ashore by tender and wake up at a different island every day. This sailing cruise from Sint Maarten to Martinique combines the best of the Leeward and Windward Islands: white beaches, rainforest, volcanoes, French and British colonial history and crystal-clear water for snorkelling.

THE ROUTE

Sint Maarten

You embark in Marigot, on the French side of the island. After meeting the crew, the Clipper sets course south.

St. Barths

Swim in a sheltered bay and explore the stylish capital Gustavia, with its harbour full of yachts and small boutiques. If you like, you can spend the evening ashore.

St. Kitts

Green hills, sugar cane fields and plenty of history. A highlight is Brimstone Hill, an impressive hilltop fortress overlooking the sea.

Montserrat

The island of the Soufrière volcano. You hear the story of the capital Plymouth, which disappeared under the ash, and see the landscape the volcano left behind.

Îles des Saintes

Quiet island life on a small archipelago near Guadeloupe. Perfect for swimming and snorkelling, or for exploring the village of Terre-de-Haut on foot.

Dominica

The greenest island of the voyage, with rainforest, waterfalls and volcanic nature. Take a boat up the Indian River through the mangroves, or join a tour across the island.

Martinique

The voyage ends in Fort-de-France, with one last look across the bay before you disembark.

EXTRA INFORMATION

LIFE ON BOARD

Breakfast is served as a buffet. In good weather, lunch and dinner are served on deck as much as possible, otherwise in the longroom. At sunset there are drinks with snacks. All cabins have a private bathroom, air conditioning and a porthole, finished in mahogany and brass.

WHO IS THIS SAILING TRIP FOR?

This voyage is ideal for anyone who wants to discover the Caribbean in a relaxed, authentic way. You do not need to be a sailor: the experienced crew sails the ship, and if you like, you can help set the sails, take the helm or keep watch. Couples, friends and solo travellers all feel at home. And if you have sailed on the North Sea or the Atlantic before, this is a wonderful introduction to tropical sailing.

THE CLIPPER STAD AMSTERDAM

The Clipper Stad Amsterdam is a 76-metre three-masted full-rigged ship, built in the style of the fast clippers of the nineteenth century. She combines the elegance of a historic sailing ship with modern comfort. There are 14 guest cabins, all with a private bathroom, and an atmospheric longroom where you eat, read and meet fellow guests. The spacious deck is the place for the sundowner, stargazing or simply enjoying the wind in the sails.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Travel insurance covering medical costs, accidents and repatriation is mandatory. Cancellation insurance is recommended.
  • For Saint-Martin you need a passport, not an ID card. It must be valid for at least six months after your return.
  • Every guest completes a health declaration in advance. From age 75, a maritime medical certificate is required. You must be able to step over a threshold of about 60 cm and get in and out of the tender on your own.
  • Please let us know any dietary requirements when booking.
  • We recommend arriving one day before embarkation: the ship cannot wait for you.
  • The weather sets the route: the captain may decide to motor, or to call at a port earlier or later.

WELCOME ABOARD

The captain and his 30 crew members would like to welcome you

ON DECK

On the upper deck you can imagine yourself on a historic clipper from the nineteenth century. The beautiful bridge, the three enormous masts, the lines on deck, the beautifully maintained teak woodwork, the crew that lifts the sails the way it did in the nineteenth century: everything breathes the atmosphere of the rugged, nineteenth-century seafaring. At the same time, the passenger sailing ship Stad Amsterdam also has the luxury of the 21st century in store for you.

While the crew keeps the ship on course, our hospitality crew serves delicious drinks and snacks from the bar on deck, prepared by our chef in his galley.

THE LONGROOM

The longroom has a spacious bar and a small library. There is room for 55 people during a served lunch or dinner. The warm woodwork, the many copper and the round staircase with ornate bars are reminiscent of the look of the legendary Cutty Sark. Of course, all modern audio-visual means, for presentations and the like, are available.

THE CABINS

The 14 guest cabins are located on the inner deck and all have a porthole. Each cabin has a telephone (with satellite connection) and air conditioning. They are equipped as standard for two people, but can easily be adapted for a stay with three or four people.

All cabins are equipped with a private bathroom with sink, shower and toilet. The finish with lots of wood and copper work gives the cabins a classic look. All cabins are similar in layout and have an area of about 11 m².
