Northern Norway Sailing Cruise - Whales and Wonders

Norway

Tromsø > Malangen > Finnsnes > Skrolsvik > Andenes > Gryllefjord > Sommarøy > Tromsø

Nature lovers can indulge themselves in the rugged landscape of Northern Norway. Expedition ship Antigua will take you to places you would normally not get to. During this trip you will see astonishing panoramas and unique natural phenomena. In winter, an extra dimension is added to the exceptionally beautiful nature reserve far above the Arctic Circle: the Northern Lights, one of the most special natural phenomena on earth. Aurora Borealis, as the Northern Lights or Arctic Lights are also called, is unique and visible in different colors every time. Green, purple, blue, the Northern Lights will never be bored. With the Antigua we look for places and harbors without light pollution, so that you have the best chances to see the Northern Lights in all their splendor.

Another phenomenon in the Norwegian winter is the slow swimming groups of whales and orcas. Nowhere in the world are such large groups of whales visible than in Northern Norway. They are looking for fish and hunting among the fjords of Norway. With the Antigua we navigate to places where we can view the largest mammals in the world in an animal-friendly and original way.

The magical Northern Lights and large groups of whales are central to this winter trip. The route of this expedition therefore depends on the circumstances. The captain of the Antigua will look for the right places to view the wintry scenery. In combination with the untouched nature reserve in the Arctic Ocean, this guarantees your unforgettable winter experience!

Your sailing trip starts in Tromsø. This modern city in the Arctic is where culture and nature meet. In winter, Tromsø is literally a beacon of light in the darkness of the night. In this city you can fully enjoy the Norwegian warmth, relaxation and conviviality. Tromsø is also called the Paris of the North! You can board the Antigua from 6:00 PM in Tromsø. You will get to know your travel companions, the ship's crew and, of course, your stay for the next few days.

These days are dedicated to whale watching and looking for beautiful places to admire the Northern Lights. During this period, the days quickly become shorter, so that you will be surprised by the breathtaking bocage landscape with its special light. Twilight magically reveals the hidden beauty of the Arctic.

If you moor in the twilight in the small fishing or reindeer villages, your heart will soon be stolen. Ashore you can taste the life that has been lived for centuries in the far North. During the walks you will be amazed by the pristine nature of the area and you will be intrigued by the phenomenal Northern Lights.

The captain will hoist the sails of the imposing three-masted barquentine as often as possible. The silence and timelessness of the Arctic Ocean, the imposing fjords and majestic mountains come together perfectly as the Antigua glides silently through the water.

On Friday we set course for the final destination Tromsø. In the evening we will arrive there; after which you will be overwhelmed by a warm and cozy beacon of light in the dark far North.

Possible ports and anchorages:

Andfjorden, Senja, Andenes, Gryllefjord, Skrolsvik, Sommaroy, Burfjorden, Hamnes, Uloya, Nord-Lenangen

Note: Wind and weather can significantly affect the trip. If necessary due to unforeseen circumstances, important changes to the route can be made.

After breakfast you can say goodbye to your tour group and the crew of the Antigua. Disembarkation is at 9:00 AM in Tromsø. From there you can reach the airport in 20 minutes by taxi.

If you still have time on the last day, it is definitely worth exploring further Tromsø. In this bustling Arctic city you will find several attractions such as an aquarium, museums, and the northernmost botanical garden in the world. For lovers of outdoor activities there is also a lot to do, the city center of Tromsø is just a stone's throw away from the beautiful unspoilt nature where you can walk to your heart's content. In winter you can also take a nice dog sled trip.

Antigua

Year of Construction 1957

The barquentine Antigua has been sailing European waters for over 50 years. She began life as a UK fishing ship build 1957. With sense of nautical tradition and attention to detail, in 1993 the Antigua was converted to the beautiful tall ship she is today.
