In addition to an expedition leader and a guide, who can tell you everything about this beautiful area, the history and flora and fauna, a professional photographer is also present on this photography trip.

In September the sun is low and that gives a warm evening light. We sail along the beautiful coast with glaciers and jagged mountain peaks, from which the island owes its name. For longer distances we also sail at night, otherwise we anchor in the shelter of a fjord. On land we look for good photo motifs and we make excursions to relics from different periods of Spitsbergen's history, for example tear ovens and graves at old whaling stations, trapper's huts, weather stations and coal mines. But we can also encounter traces of well-known explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile on excursions.

Moreover, in September the first snow can cover the landscape under a beautiful white blanket and with a bit of luck the Northern Lights can be spotted.

There will be one or two shore excursions per day, with an emphasis on photography, but also with the space and time to experience this unique nature. We hope to show as much as possible of the arctic fauna: whales, arctic foxes, walruses, birds and of course the polar bear. Our crew will do its utmost to find the best seats; Of course we cannot give a guarantee on seeing the wildlife. In between excursions, the Antigua sails to a new destination. In time at sea you can chat with your fellow travelers in the warm salon while enjoying a cup of tea, read a book or edit your photos. When the Antigua arrives in Longyearbyen again, it is definitely worth spending some time in Longyearbyen.

We do not work with a daily itinerary from the program, as we like to be able to respond to the weather and the location of any whales and other wildlife. The captain and expedition leader coordinate the route in such a way that the best possible route is sailed. If you would like more information in advance, do not hesitate to contact us.

Weather and wind can affect the itinerary.

Antigua

Year of Construction 1957

The barquentine Antigua has been sailing European waters for over 50 years. She began life as a UK fishing ship build 1957. With sense of nautical tradition and attention to detail, in 1993 the Antigua was converted to the beautiful tall ship she is today.
