Sailing holiday Skye / Hebrides (9 days)

Scotland

Oban > Tobermory > Barra > Eigg > Harris & Lewis

Sailing trip Skye / Hebrides: If there is still untouched nature somewhere in Europe, then that certainly applies to the islands of the Scottish west coast: the inner and outer Hebrides.

The silence of the mountains, the indescribable views, the rugged coasts with hidden coves and their quiet fishing villages and the unique sight of the islands in the distance, is something that one has to see in his life. The Flying Dutchman will take you to these special islands, which can only be reached by ship.

The specified program is a guide. Changes due to the effects of weather, current and wind are possible. Flexibility is required for this trip.

Day 1: Oban

Our Sailing trip Skye / Hebrides starts in Oban, a cozy fishing place with lots of things to do. You are welcomed on board at 18.00 and have the opportunity to meet the crew and the other guests. If everyone is settled we’ll have a welcome dinner and raise a glass to a wonderful trip.

Day 2: Tobermory

After a nice breakfast everyone has time enough to discover Oban or make a tour in the Oban whiskey distillery. After lunch we sail if possible to Mull and the crew will give you sailing instructions. On our way we pass the impressive Duart Castle, what a beautiful sight is from the water. At the end of the day we arrive in Tobermory, a beautiful place with its colored houses and his small, but famous whiskey distillery.

Day 3 & 4: Lewis and Harris

Our Sailing trip Skye / Hebrides continues with a visit to the outer Hebrides Harris and Lewis. We arrive in Stornoway, the main port on Lewis. Its protected position convinced the Vikings, who founded the settlement Stornoway in the 9th century. There are good roads that run along the coast with their small villages and white sand beaches.

Isle of Harris is the southern part with deep bays and high mountains. Here you can see the landscape, where the inspiration for the beautiful Harris Tweed comes from. The west coast of the island of Harris has stunning beaches, all flanked by dunes and Machair (a unique plant). The islands are so remote that only a few tourists bother to come here. There are simple places that are connected by narrow streets. The signs on the streets are in Gaelic. And the supply of food depends on the amount of space available on board the supply vessel. The islands have a wealth of prehistoric monuments and nature reserves. The east is mainly mountainous and in the west you can enjoy the sandy beaches. You can visit the whole island by bus.

Day 5: Skye

Today we sail to Skye, one of the biggest islands. Skye has impressive landscapes, a beautiful coastline and off course the famous Talisker distillery. We stay in the main town, Portree.

Day 6: Portree

A large part of the day we stay in Portree, a town with 2000 inhabitants. Uou will have the opportunity to discover Portree or the a part of the island. At the end of the day we move on to Plockton, a wonderful little village on the banks of Loch Carron.

Day 7: Eigg

The Small Isles are an archipelago of four small islands south of Skye: Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna. Every island is different. During this Sailing trip Skye / Hebrides, we probably visit Eigg with its unique mountain. Between the islands we hope to observe sharks, whales and dolphins .

Day 8: Scottish west coast and Oban

After a nice breakfast, we sail back to Oban. During the trip, we see the rugged coast of Mull with his pristine beauty, the mountains in the distance. In the evening, when we arrive in Oban, we will have a nice dinner together and maybe you feel like going to a pub and enjoy some traditional live music.

Day 9: Oban

Unfortunately, the beautiful Sailing trip Skye / Hebrides has come to an end. After a good breakfast it is time to say goodbye to the Flying Dutchman and its crew.
