sailing from Rotterdam to Lisbon

North Sea

Rotterdam > Cherbourg > Brest > Porto > Lisbon

This first stage is immediately an exciting one. Sailing on the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay in winter is challenging, exactly what the Morgenster is made for!

We depart from the Veerhaven, an idyllic Rotterdam harbor next to the Erasmus Bridge. We descend the Nieuwe Waterweg past vast harbors and large seagoing vessels.

At sea we hoist the sails and the ship gets into her rhythm. It is striking here how busy it is in this part of the North Sea. Pilot boats, dredgers and on the horizon shipping lanes and wind farms.

We sail across the North Sea, Bay of Biscay and Atlantic Ocean to Lisbon. Along the way there is time to make stops, in good weather we can choose the nicest places, in less good weather we will sometimes call at a harbor to take shelter.

When we have passed the white chalk cliffs at Calais and Dover, the Channel widens and it becomes quieter with shipping traffic. The closer we get to the Bay of Biscay the longer the waves get and the more relaxed the sailing becomes. Also because everyone has now become well acquainted with the ship and has been swung into it.

The Bay of Biscay has its own absolute splendor. Because here the deep ocean merges into the European continental shelf where the long waves from the Atlantic Ocean collide, large waves can arise here. The experienced crew of the Morgenster will guide us safely through this, which can result in spectacular sailing.

As soon as the rugged coast of Galicia comes into view, you also start to notice the temperature that we are moving further south. We sail along the coast of Spain to Portugal. As we enter the Bay of Lisbon, up the Tagus, we see the impressive Ponte 25 de Abril. The capital of Portugal is of an incomparable beauty that has survived the centuries remarkably unscathed. Here we enjoy local delicacies and a well-deserved drink in the warm nightlife after a successful trip.

Then we will quickly prepare for the big crossing across the Atlantic Ocean to French Guiana.
