Sailing from Martinique to St. Maarten
the Caribbean
Martinique > Dominica > Guadeloupe > Antigua > Saint Kitts > Sint Maarten
We start in Martinique, an overseas department of France. They speak French there and pay for their baguettes and croissants with euros. Martinique is called 'the island of flowers' and with good reason, it has an abundance of flora. Most areas are hilly, there is rainforest with lianas and even some cloud forest. Martinique is also a great place to go out in the many bars and restaurants.
But we won't stay here too long because there is much more to discover. We hoist the sails and set sail for Dominica, a paradise island known as an eco-tourism destination.

The volcanoes of Dominica are so steep and mountainous that much rainforest has been spared for logging and plantations. Here meandering rivers turn into waterfalls. Brightly colored birds whistle between the meter-high ferns, lianas and forest giants. Anyone who takes the trouble to climb and slither into the forest will see a surreal phenomenon: wisps of hot gas rise from cracks and holes in the volcanic mountains, smelling like rotten eggs. Springs originating from the volcano heat water streams. And on top of the mountain there is a water-filled crater bubbling. About a thousand species of plants grow there, including many flowers. Dominica has 195 species of birds. Mammals in Dominica are limited to a few bats and marine mammals such as the sperm whale, Caribbean manatee and humpback whale.
We sail further north. Guadeloupe is not an island in itself but a group of large and small, inhabited and uninhabited islands, including Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, La Désirade, Marie-Galante and Les Saintes and the Petite Terre Islands. You can only get to the latter by boat. These islands are known for their beautiful white beaches with palm trees. No people live here, but 10,000 iguanas do. One of the special places we can visit here. Because during this journey we are all at the helm. There are so many beautiful places here that we can't visit them all. Passengers can submit their wishes and preferences and we will respond as much as possible. The ship and crew are at your service and together we will make it a dream trip!
When we leave Guadeloupe behind us, we will go for a nice bit of sailing again. On longer stretches we can also choose to spend the night sailing. The nights at sea are magical. When it gets dark we turn on the navigation lights so that other ships can see us clearly. Other ships are also illuminated with a sea of cheerful white, green and red lights through which we navigate safely as a result. A sunrise from a ship on the high seas is unsurpassed.
From here there are many beautiful islands to visit, Antigua and Barbuda, slightly posh islands with beautiful reefs and tropical fish. Saint Kitts and Nevis are still relatively unspoilt and the railway line that used to transport sugar from the plantations can now be used to explore the island. Sint Eustatius or Statia as they call the island locally has a huge underwater nature reserve with pristine coral reefs and 18th century shipwrecks. It is teeming with seahorses, rays, sharks and sea turtles. The island is also on the migration route of humpback whales, so there is a good chance of encountering some. In the various museums you can learn more about (Dutch) colonial history.
Sint Barthelemy is a jet set island, recognizable by the mega yachts anchored here. On the beaches you will encounter movie stars, supermodels and other celebrities. The island is not so popular for nothing, it is beautiful and in addition to everything you would expect from a Caribbean island, it also has amenities such as exclusive restaurants and chic bars.
We end this stage where the Netherlands borders France: Sint Maarten.
