Traveling from Cape Town to the Azores is a true Ocean adventure. A voyage of 47 days with nearly 6000 miles, crossing the equator, possibly visiting St Helena and Ascension Island before finishing the voyage on an island group in the middle of an ocean, the Azores.
Cape Town
Cape Town is known for many things, amongst them the Table Mountain. In 2013 the Tecla crew made the journey up on the mountain and reckoned it was certainly worth it! From the harbor, Waterfront, you can see Table mountain as a back drop of the Tecla while she is moored there. The Waterfront is a beautiful place to be. With many opportunities for shopping, having a drink on a nice terrace and getting into some markets with the finest foods.
With many miles ahead of you, sail will be set and the traditional S turn will be used to sail with the wind from the South Atlantic into the North Atlantic. Crossing the equator is a true experience. The changing weather, with changing clouds and winds until there is mostly sunshine and hardly a breeze when you meet Neptune!
With so many days at sea watches will become part of your day to day rhythm and sail changes will be your exercise of the day.
And when you get to the Azores, make sure to leave a worthy drawing on the wall!
Horta, Faial
On the Azores the Tecla will be moored in Horta on the island Faial. Horta is THE place to be for sailors who have crossed an ocean. And you will be one of the few there who have actually crossed two! Most of the sailors there are heading back from the Caribbean and most of them meet in the bar called Peter Sport, just opposite the harbor.

The Tecla crew is known to take a dip in the ocean, while the ship is sailing! Are you up for an adventure? Bring it on! This voyage will also include a crossing of the equator. And so you will meet Neptune and his wife.... Are you ready to be welcomed into the realm of the Sea Turtle?
Itinerary
There is no itinerary possible for this voyage, as its main component is the ocean and the wind. On day 1 you wille be welcomed by the captain and here the voyage plan will be explained. Depending on wind and weather, there will be possibilities to stop on St Helena, over 1700 miles from Cape Town. And after that Ascension is at 2400 miles from Cape Town.
How to travel
Cape Town has its own airport from which you can travel easily to the center of town, which is connected to the Waterfront. Here you will wind the Tecla. On the Azores the Tecla will finish her voyage on Faial, Horta. There is an airport at approximately 30 minutes drive by taxi or bus.
Ocean voyages like this one are all about getting into the rhythm of the ship, the watches and the ocean. The weather system drives the ship and together with everybody on board you will get the ship to her destination.
The route the Tecla will follow is a sailing route, following the Benguela current into the South Equatorial Current taking the North East wind into a patch of variable winds until the Gulfstream and the West winds set the Tecla in the direction of the Azores. A big S turn that seems the long way, but is an amazing sailing route!

Sail Training Program
On board the tecla we work with a Sail training program developed by the Dutch Sail Training Association (STAN). This sail training program is not only about learning to sail but uses sailing as a tool for personal development. Trainees on board are encouraged to step out of the comfort zone to experience new things. This applies to all ages! At the end of the trip, long or short, the trainees get a logbook containing the past process and how far they have come. Different skills are developed depending on the length of the trip. These can come in handy in a professional sailing environment as well as outside the maritime world.
Sail training makes sailing that slightly more than an active vacation.
