sailing from Azores to Italy

Atlantic ocean

Ponta delgada - Azores > Cagliari - Sardegna

Every year the Clipper Stad Amsterdam makes a number of adventurous sailing trips. With or without sailing experience you are cordially invited to sail along and embark on the adventure with our crew.

This adventurous sailing trip starts on Sunday 8 May in the Port of Ponta Delgada in the Azores where the captain and crew give you a warm welcome.

The city of Ponta Delgada is located on the island of São Miguel in the archipelago of the Açores. A little paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean !

São Miguel, also known as the "Green Island", is the largest island in the Azores. Be surprised by the small streets with white and colored houses and Portuguese style, old churches and great squares. The crater lakes, the rugged coastline and the beautiful green nature also make it a fantastic island to stay for a few days. For example, pay a visit to the volcanic crater of Sete Cidades or the inactive volcano Do Fogo with its lake before you step on board with us.

DEPARTURE FROM PONTA DELGADA

The Azores archipelago, consisting of 9 inhabited and eight uninhabited islands, lies in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,500 km from the Portuguese coast. The next morning after breakfast everything is ready for the "crossing" of this beautiful archipelago to the southern tip of the Italian island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea.

On this wonderful sailing trip, become proficient in setting the sails and climb, for example, the highest mast to be rewarded with a truly magnificent view.

DURING THE TRIP

What could be better than standing on the lookout with nothing but the sea around you. The waves, the occasionally rough sea, maybe other ships and dolphins that swim around the bow and the special experience of feeling small and insignificant in the overwhelming nature. Enjoy the peace and quiet around you, disconnect from the hectic pace of our daily lives, find time to relax on deck or in the longroom with a book from our well-stocked library and have special conversations with the crew and with the other guests.

Meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, are served together with the crew in the longroom at times that are tailored to the waiting system.

Every evening, after dinner, the captain gives a presentation in the longroom about the route sailed for the day, the weather forecasts and the route for the next day.

SEA SAILING AND WATCHING

The crew on board works in a 3 watch system. For example, you have the red watch (from 12.00 to 16.00 and from 00.00 to 04.00), the white watch (from 16.00 to 20.00 and from 04.00 to 08.00) and the blue watch (from 20.00 to 00.00 and from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m.). 12.00).

If you like this, you can be assigned to one of those three waits. This way you experience what it is like to sail at sea on a ship like the Clipper. Set sails and take them away, man the lookout, set the course or keep watch; you can do it all. You may enjoy helping out in the galley and/or assisting the crew with on-board maintenance. There are plenty of options!

If you are on the red watch, you can enjoy the serene tranquility of the high seas and the endless starry sky at night. In the white watch you will be surprised by spectacular sunrises and if you have the blue watch you can enjoy a normal day and night rhythm.

THE STREET OF GIBRALTAR

A special experience is certainly the passage of the Strait of Gibraltar. This strait connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and separates European Spain and African Morocco. The passage is narrow, the ship traffic is busy, the weather is sometimes rough and there is a chance that you will spot a whale!

CAGLIARI, SARDINIA: OUR FINAL DESTINATION

After some 1,700 nautical miles nonstop, the Clipper will dock at Cagliari harbor at the end of the day on May 22. With a favorable wind it may be possible to drop anchor and spend the afternoon before the scheduled arrival in a beautiful bay swimming and relaxing.

Then there is only one night left on board before this special journey comes to a definitive end. Do you still have time for a wonderful visit to the city? Just like Rome, Cagliari is built on seven hills and culture, antiquity, nature, shops, terraces and above all conviviality and atmosphere predominate. For those looking for exotic beaches, you don't have to travel far.

We look forward to seeing you on board our ship again.

Clipper City Amsterdam & COVID-19

The Rederij closely follows developments regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the measures taken by the Dutch government and the safety of our guests and crew has the highest priority. In the context of the prevention of contamination with the corona virus, the Clipper Stad Amsterdam as an international passenger ship is not only bound by the measures prescribed by the Dutch government and the RIVM, but also by the applicable measures that apply worldwide on board international passenger ships.

In order to create a safe and responsible environment on board - where keeping a distance of 1.5 meters is not always possible - sailing is only possible for those on board who meet the following requirements:

COVID vaccination

All guests are required to be fully vaccinated including the booster vaccination. The booster must be at least 2 weeks old. EU residents will be asked to show their European vaccination certificate with a QR code. We advise EU residents to also print their QR code (international) and bring it on paper. Non-European guests are allowed to show their official paper vaccination certificate upon boarding.

NAAT/ PCR Test

In addition, to gain access to the ship, all guests must present a negative PCR test result with an International Travel Certificate upon boarding. The time of taking the test must not be more than 72 hours before embarkation. To be clear: an antigen rapid test (with or without an international travel certificate) will not suffice.

Antigen test

In addition to the PCR test, all guests are required to show a negative result of an antigen test with a certificate. The time of the test must not be more than 24 hours before embarkation.

travel insurance

Taking out travel insurance is mandatory at all times for all our sailing trips. The compulsory travel insurance to be taken out by you must, in addition to cover for medical costs, accidents and repatriation (article 13.9 of the general terms and conditions), also cover all COVID-19-related medical costs. Check in advance with your insurer whether these costs are indeed covered when you take out your travel insurance.

It is recommended to take out cancellation insurance.

Cancellation

In unforeseen COVID-19 related situations involving force majeure, we offer a 100% refund guarantee with regard to the travel sum paid to us. For all other - non-COVID - reasons to cancel, our usual terms and conditions apply.

Adverse Weather Conditions & Maintenance

Please bear in mind that unfavorable weather conditions (eg lack or too much wind) can make the captain decide to sail on engine power, to enter or leave a harbor earlier/later. During our adventurous sailing trips, the crew of the City of Amsterdam is also responsible for the maintenance program of the Clipper. That is also part of life aboard the Tall Ships. If you want to help, this is welcome, but never an obligation.

WELCOME ABOARD

The captain and his 30 crew members would like to welcome you

ON DECK

On the upper deck you can imagine yourself on a historic clipper from the nineteenth century. The beautiful bridge, the three enormous masts, the lines on deck, the beautifully maintained teak woodwork, the crew that lifts the sails the way it did in the nineteenth century: everything breathes the atmosphere of the rugged, nineteenth-century seafaring. At the same time, the passenger sailing ship Stad Amsterdam also has the luxury of the 21st century in store for you.

While the crew keeps the ship on course, our hospitality crew serves delicious drinks and snacks from the bar on deck, prepared by our chef in his galley.

THE LONGROOM

The longroom has a spacious bar and a small library. There is room for 55 people during a served lunch or dinner. The warm woodwork, the many copper and the round staircase with ornate bars are reminiscent of the look of the legendary Cutty Sark. Of course, all modern audio-visual means, for presentations and the like, are available.

THE CABINS

The 14 guest cabins are located on the inner deck and all have a porthole. Each cabin has a telephone (with satellite connection) and air conditioning. They are equipped as standard for two people, but can easily be adapted for a stay with three or four people.

All cabins are equipped with a private bathroom with sink, shower and toilet. The finish with lots of wood and copper work gives the cabins a classic look. All cabins are similar in layout and have an area of about 11 m².
