TWO FACES OF WESTERN NORWAY

This voyage shows both the sheltered interior of the fjords and the open coast on the North Sea. From the quiet waters around Eidfjord to the fishing and shipping town of Haugesund.

In six nights the ship becomes a familiar home. There is no need to fill every hour: much of the pleasure lies in the journey itself.

THE ROUTE

Bergen

Departure from the old Hanseatic city, with the warehouses of Bryggen and its busy harbour.

The Hardangerfjord

Inland through one of Norway's longest fjords, past wooded slopes, orchards and mountains.

Eidfjord

At the head of the fjord the mountains seem within reach. There is time to explore the village and its surroundings.

Haugesund

Back to the coast: a town of fishing and shipping on the North Sea. Walk along the quays or stop for coffee.

Stavanger

The voyage ends in Stavanger, with its old centre Gamle Stavanger full of white wooden houses and cobbled lanes.

EXTRA INFORMATION

LIFE ON BOARD

The Santa Maria Manuela is a 68-metre steel four-masted schooner, built in 1937 for the Portuguese cod fishery off Newfoundland and Greenland, the famous White Fleet. After a thorough restoration she has been sailing again since 2010, now with guests. Every cabin has its own bathroom with shower: shared cabins with bunks for four to six people (separate for men and women), cabins with a bunk bed or a double bed, and spacious master cabins for two to four people. A permanent crew sails the ship; you are always welcome to help, but you do not have to. You can help hoist and trim the sails, take the helm, learn knots or climb the mast under supervision. If you prefer to rest, find a spot on deck or in the bowsprit net. Meals are provided on board and eaten together.

WHO IS THIS VOYAGE FOR

For those who want to experience Norwegian nature at a gentle pace, with a mix of fjord and coast.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Stavanger has an airport with direct flights to Amsterdam.
  • No sailing experience is needed; the crew explains everything.
  • The ship sails under the Portuguese flag and the language on board is English.
  • Travel insurance covering medical costs and repatriation is required; cancellation insurance is recommended.

  • Ideally arrive a day before departure: the ship cannot wait for late arrivals.
