Reykjavik – Ullapool

Iceland

Reykjavik > Vestmannaeyjar > Faroe Islands > Shetland Islands > Orkney-Eilanden > Stornoway > Ullapool

The Tecla will set sail from Reykjavik, sailing to Ullapool, Scotland.

This voyage is all depending on wind and weather. The roughly 700 miles between Reykjavik and Ullapool can be sailed in 5 days with a favorable wind, leaving time for exploring. But if winds are less favorable, this will mean only sea time until the Ullapool. Exploring may encompass the Faroe Islands, but definitely Shetland, Orkneys and the Outer Hebrides.

Underway you can expect all kinds of weather. Head winds, no winds, beam reach, they will all come to pass! As well as many sea birds and hopefully some sea mammals! Leaving Reykjavik the chances are that you will see Orca’s, Humpback Whales and Common dolphins. Which are not at all Common when they play with the bow wave and send you off on a good voyage!

You will be part of the crew that will keep watch. During your watch you will be out on deck, steering the vessel, being on the lookout and helping out with sail handeling. If you need any see time or miles logged, bring your booklets and we can help out.

From Reykjavik a possible stop can be made on Vestmannaeyjar, a small island on the south coast of Iceland, before heading to the Faroe Islands. On the Faroes, there will be time enough to explore two maybe three islands, weather depending. The Faroe islands are Danish and not easy to reach, but there is always a bay or island with a sheltered harbour or anchorage.

Then the voyage goes on to the Shetland islands. Herring museums and relics are almost as easy to find as influences of the vikings.

Next stop the Orkneys. Not just known for their whisky, but also part of Unesco’s world Heritage.

The mainland is getting closer now, but not before you stop on the Outer Hebrides. The islands on the West coast of Scotland, that shelter the mainland from the Atlantic Ocean. A harsh but amazingly beautiful place. Ullapool is the last stop for this voyage.

Transportation from Ullapool is easiest with a bus to Inverness and then fly, or a bus to Lochluichart and then onward to Glasgow etc. by train.

Tecla

The Tecla is a beautiful sailingship with a tough rig. Together with her crew she explores the remote places. One more accessible than the other. Tecla stands for adventure, nature, wonder and splendor. With this exceptional ship and its exceptional program you are good for a memorable trip.

Sail Training Program

On board the tecla we work with a Sail training program developed by the Dutch Sail Training Association (STAN). This sail training program is not only about learning to sail but uses sailing as a tool for personal development. Trainees on board are encouraged to step out of the comfort zone to experience new things. This applies to all ages! At the end of the trip, long or short, the trainees get a logbook containing the past process and how far they have come. Different skills are developed depending on the length of the trip. These can come in handy in a professional sailing environment as well as outside the maritime world.

Sail training makes sailing that slightly more than an active vacation.
