Nieuw Nickerie is the third city of Suriname and our last stop before we make the big crossing to the Caribbean. Here we have the chance to enjoy Surinamese life in one of the many bars or to visit the nature reserve Bigi Pan where many special bird species occur, such as the scarlet ibis.

From Nieuw Nickerie it is two to three days sailing to Tobago. This former pirate nest was also called the hidden island because it has remained hidden from the rest of the (western) world for so long. Although people already lived on the island 7000 years ago. The name means tobacco. Daniel Defoe situated the story of Robinson Crusoe on Tobago. Although this island is a paradise for nature lovers, tourism here is less developed than on other Caribbean islands. On the north side there are beautiful palm beaches and bays where you are the only ship to anchor. In the south is one of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling spots in the entire Caribbean: the Buccoo Reef. But first we sail to Scarborough where we clear customs. Before we continue to Grenada, we could take a look at the uninhabited islands on the east side of Tobago.

Grenada is 10 hours away by boat and was discovered by Columbus in 1498. The island is largely covered with tropical rainforest, numerous rivers fed by springs flow along its mountain slopes, occasionally ending in waterfalls.

Grenada is known for its nutmeg, which they also use in delicious cocktails.

The great wealth of tropical fish and the many wrecks that surround the island make Grenada a paradise for diving and snorkelling.
