FROM VIGO TO GRAN CANARIA

A true milemaker: from Vigo in northern Spain, the Clipper Stad Amsterdam sets course south onto the Atlantic Ocean. You spend several consecutive days at sea, and with a bit of luck the ship picks up the northeast trade winds along the way. You leave in a crisp winter (8–12 °C) and arrive in the sunshine of Gran Canaria (18–22 °C). No experience needed: you join the watches and learn to set sails, steer and navigate as you go. The perfect warm-up for anyone continuing on the ocean crossing to Sint Maarten.

WHAT IS A MILEMAKER?

A milemaker is a sailing voyage on which the ship moves from one sailing area to the next, here from the Spanish coast to the Canary Islands. Unlike an island-hopping cruise, the sailing itself takes centre stage: more than 900 nautical miles of open ocean, day and night. It is the most authentic way to experience an ocean passage on a tall ship, and often a more affordable way to sail on a large sailing ship.

DURING THE VOYAGE

Standing lookout with nothing but sea around you, dolphins swimming at the bow, seabirds following the ship and a night sky you never see on land. Between watches you relax on deck or in the longroom with a book from the library on board, and enjoy long conversations with the crew and fellow guests. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served with the crew in the longroom, at times that fit the watch system. Every evening the captain explains the route sailed, the weather forecast and the plans for the next day.

OCEAN SAILING AND WATCHKEEPING

The crew works in three watches of four hours on and eight hours off. The red watch runs from 12:00 to 16:00 and from 00:00 to 04:00, the white watch from 16:00 to 20:00 and from 04:00 to 08:00, and the blue watch from 20:00 to 00:00 and from 08:00 to 12:00. If you like, you can join one of these watches. You help set and take in the sails, take the helm, keep lookout or plot the course on the chart. The red watch shows you the silence of the ocean at night, the white watch the sunrise at sea, and the blue watch keeps your day and night rhythm closest to normal.

THE CLIPPER STAD AMSTERDAM

The Clipper Stad Amsterdam is a 76-metre three-masted full-rigged ship, built in the style of the fast clippers of the nineteenth century. She combines the atmosphere of a historic sailing ship with modern comfort: 14 guest cabins of about 11 m², all with a private bathroom and porthole, and a warm longroom full of wood and brass.

WHO IS THIS VOYAGE FOR?

For anyone who wants to experience real ocean sailing, with or without experience. You do not need to be a seasoned sailor, but you should enjoy joining in and spending a few days out of sight of land. It is also an ideal preparation for a longer ocean crossing.

GOOD TO KNOW

• Travel insurance covering medical costs, accidents and repatriation is mandatory. Cancellation insurance is recommended.
• Every guest completes a health declaration in advance. From age 75, a maritime medical examination is required.
• We recommend arriving in Vigo one day before embarkation.
• The weather sets the route: the captain may decide to motor, or to call at a port earlier or later.
• The crew also carries out maintenance on the ship during the voyage. You are welcome to help, but it is never required.

Do I need sailing experience?

No. The crew teaches you everything you need. You can join in as much or as little as you like.

Will I get seasick?

At first the ship may pitch and roll, especially in the Bay of Biscay. After a day or two most people get used to it. Bring seasickness remedies to be safe.

How do I get to Vigo and back from Las Palmas?

Vigo has its own airport and is also easy to reach via Porto or Santiago de Compostela. There are daily flights from Las Palmas to Belgium and the Netherlands. Flights are not included. We are happy to advise you.

What should I bring?

Warm and waterproof clothing for the first days, summer clothing for the Canary Islands, sturdy non-marking shoes, a hat, sun cream and your passport.

The Clipper is 76 meters long and has 31 sails with a total surface of 2200 square meters. The ship has an authentic squared rig, a sharp clipper bow and sails as a passenger ship under the Dutch flag. The Clipper has 14 luxury cabins, a spacious dining room (the longroom) for dinners and presentations and an outdoor bar. The Clipper Stad Amsterdam can be booked privately for luxury cruises and corporate events. In addition, you can stay on board for a luxurious cruise or an adventurous sailing trip.

ON DECK

On the upper deck you can imagine yourself on a historic clipper from the nineteenth century. The beautiful bridge, the three enormous masts, the lines on deck, the beautifully maintained teak woodwork, the crew that lifts the sails the way it did in the nineteenth century: everything breathes the atmosphere of the rugged, nineteenth-century seafaring. At the same time, the passenger sailing ship Stad Amsterdam also has the luxury of the 21st century in store for you.

While the crew keeps the ship on course, our hospitality crew serves delicious drinks and snacks from the bar on deck, prepared by our chef in his galley.

THE LONGROOM

The longroom has a spacious bar and a small library. There is room for 55 people during a served lunch or dinner. The warm woodwork, the many copper and the round staircase with ornate bars are reminiscent of the look of the legendary Cutty Sark. Of course, all modern audio-visual means, for presentations and the like, are available.

THE CABINS

The 14 guest cabins are located on the inner deck and all have a porthole. Each cabin has a telephone (with satellite connection) and air conditioning. They are equipped as standard for two people, but can easily be adapted for a stay with three or four people.

All cabins are equipped with a private bathroom with sink, shower and toilet. The finish with lots of wood and copper work gives the cabins a classic look. All cabins are similar in layout and have an area of ​​about 11 m².
