In 2018, National Geographic worked with the Ocean Azul and Waitt Foundations for a month to dive aboard the tall ship Santa Maria Manuela. 617 dives were launched in the Azores archipelago in the name of science and preservation. The National Geographic documentary that resulted from it showed the world how amazing the waters are around the Azores. In 2019 we will dive some of the best locations of this expedition around Faial, Flores and Corvo Islands. All with local knowledge of the best locations in specific swell and weather conditions.

schedule

Horta

We start our journey in Horta, Azores. The town on the island of Faial. Horta is primarily known as a stopover for the large crossing. For us it is not a stopover but the start of our beautiful island tour around the Azores.

Flores

The Portuguese Ilha das Flores is a very beautiful island. It is one of the least discovered islands in Europe. It is incredibly beautiful and not at all touristy! Ideal for those seeking tranquility. Really phenomenal views with mountains, cliffs, crater lakes, cliffs, lots of greenery and an amazing flora.

Corvo

The highest mountain (crater rim) is Morro dos Homens and measures exactly 718 meters. Corvo was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2007. The island makes full use of renewable energy. The main attraction of the island is the two million year older Caldeirão crater. The bottom of this crater can be walked on. It is a medium-difficulty walk of approximately 2.5 hours. It is a beautiful and varied walk.

Princess Alice Bank

Imagine in immeasurable depths that suddenly rise to only a 35m depth. That is the Princess Alice Bank. An underwater mountain 90km south-west of the Azores. It is full of life. This is really a highlight for many diving enthusiasts.

The route depends on weather and wind. The captain has the final say and reserves the right to change the schedule.
