crossing the Atlantic on the Morgenster

Atlantic ocean

Lisbon > La Gomera > Sao Vicente > Cayenne

From Lisbon we start the great crossing to the New World. We hoist the sails and head southwest, towards the Canary Islands. We sail here on the Atlantic Ocean where waves are long and roll languidly under the ship.

After about 5 days of sailing we arrive at La Gomera, one of the less touristy Canary Islands. Here is time to disembark and explore the island. Depending on how well the trip went, we will stay here for at least a day, but probably longer, there is so much to see.

La Gomera is a volcanic island with beautiful bays, spectacular scenery and jungle inland. Rare animal species can be found in this almost undisturbed ecosystem, and various whale and dolphin species swim around the island.

There are nice bars in the towns of Valle Gran Rey and Vueltas, so this island offers something for everyone.

Our next stopover is about the same distance by boat. The trade wind pushes us to the Cape Verde Islands where Sao Vicente is our destination. We moor in Mindelo, the capital. After a few days at sea it is nice to enjoy city life and soak up some culture or take the ferry to Santo Antao, or the exotic paradise, and visit the tropical forests there. This island is free from mass tourism, which makes it authentic and unspoilt.

The Cape Verde Islands are interesting enough to stay for weeks but we have to keep going. We set course for the New World. The trade wind is strong here and blows us with lightning speed to the coast of South America. On the ocean you also get mentally detached from the shore. You have to navigate and steer along the way. Because the wind usually blows from the same direction, there is little need to adjust the sails. The temperature is pleasant and there is enough time for a good conversation, a book or a bit of lazing. The watches give structure to your day.

If the wind drops for a while, you can swim. Swimming with five kilometers of water below you and no land in sight is an experience you will never forget. Chased by a tuna, a school of flying fish occasionally shoots out of a wave. Sometimes one falls on the deck and the fresh fish is literally there for the taking.

And then suddenly land comes into view! After being at sea for a long time this is a very special experience. At such a moment you can also imagine how special this must have been for navigators who crossed the ocean without modern charts or navigation equipment.

We anchor in the mouth of the Cayenne just before the eponymous capital of French Guiana. We've made the crossing! Once ashore you will experience what it is like to have sea legs. It may take more than a day for this effect to disappear.

The sensation of real sailing with a rigged clipper brik breeds team spirit, promotes smooth cooperation and trains functional leadership. That is why we provide Sea Experience trips for various schools, nautical schools and the Royal Netherlands Navy.
