Crossing from the Azores to Holland

Atlantic ocean

The Azores, Horta > Rotterdam

On April 12, you will board the OOSTER SCHELDT in the port of Horta on the island of Faial. We recommend that you travel to Faial a few days before. The island is lushly vegetated and spring is the most beautiful time to visit it. Spring sets in early at this latitude and it is not cold. But the Azores have a real maritime climate; four seasons in one day, they say. So in addition to shorts, you should also bring a raincoat. As soon as you come on board, the crew will give you detailed instructions about life on board, the safety procedures, but also about the journey we are about to embark on. An ocean voyage is planned. This means that we will make few stops.

After a good night's sleep, it's time to leave. It is still spring and the weather is changeable here. There is a chance that we will encounter a low pressure area. That usually means westerly winds, drizzle and clearing after the front passage at this latitude. The wind will shift regularly and so we have to regularly set the sails, reef or deflect or change course. Fortunately, precisely in those cases, the wind is westerly and therefore favorable to us.

Close to the Azores there is a good chance that we will see whales, but also later in the journey we are not alone. Even so far out to sea there are many birds around us and every now and then we see an angelfish, dolphins and other sea creatures. As we approach the English Channel, the deep blue waters of the Atlantic change color to green. The continental shelf begins. Here the seabed rises steeply from a depth of 5 kilometers to a depth of 200 meters. Hundreds of seabirds and fishing vessels mark these nutrient-rich waters. If the journey goes well, we will certainly have time for one or two stops in an English or French port or on one of the Channel Islands. In mid-April we sail through the Pas de Calais into the North Sea for the last miles to Rotterdam, where we will arrive on April 26. On April 27 at 9 am you disembark in the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam

General

A mile-maker is a journey that takes the ship from A to B in the shortest possible time. Depending on the weather, a mile marker may take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the trip.

These trips are only suitable for the experienced and fit sea traveler. During a crossing or long journey, there are few possibilities to divert to a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

The shipping company would like the Oosterschelde to be accessible to the widest possible public, but you must realize that you are making a sea voyage on board a sailing ship and that this requires more of your physical body than a daily walk. Moreover, some journeys are more challenging than others. With the different levels we give an indication of how difficult the trips (can) be. Not sure if a trip is right for you? Please contact Atlasail.
