We anchor on the river Kourou in front of the colonial city of Kourou, which was founded in the 18th century. Here we can visit the Center Spatial Guyanais where the European space rockets are launched and the islands off the coast where a notorious penal colony used to be located. The famous story of “Papillon” took place here. Now the ruins are overgrown by the jungle and you feel like an Indiana Jones when you explore them.

From Kourou we sail further along the coast. The travel pace is coordinated with the passengers along the way. If we have stayed longer in Cayenne and Kourou we will probably spend a night sailing. If there is time we can anchor again on the way.

The Marowijne River flows on the border between French Guiana and Suriname. We sail up this river and anchor in front of the town of Saint Laurent du Maroni. Here we can visit another French penal colony, cross the river to the Surinamese town of Albani or sail further up the river with the dinghy to see what can be discovered there.

Then we lower ourselves down the river again and set sail towards the beating heart of Suriname: Paramaribo. Here we enjoy the good life: Parbo beer, nice atmosphere, chatting, why should we bother? To view the tropical rainforest? Oh well, maybe tomorrow.
